MEMORANDUM

TO: All Faculty and Staff

FROM: Joseph R. Thomas, Jr.

DATE: November 16, 2007

SUBJECT: Driver Safety Training required by Senate Bill No. 116
of the First Extraordinary Session of 1998

A new state law requires that all state agencies implement a comprehensive safety program with a goal of reducing injury and loss of property. Development and monitoring of the safety program is the responsibility of the State of Louisiana Office of Risk Management. State agencies that successfully pass a safety audit will receive a 5% reduction in insurance premiums. Agencies that fail the safety audit will be penalized an additional 5%.

One facet of the sate safety program is driver safety. In order for Louisiana Tech to be in compliance with this program, everyone who drives a Louisiana Tech vehicle has to have driver safety training. Also, anyone who uses their personal vehicle for university business cannot be reimbursed mileage expenses unless they have driver safety training.

Anyone who has not completed the Driver Safety Program will not be allowed to drive a Louisiana Tech vehicle or be reimbursed for personal mileage expenses.

Employees needing to complete the driver safety course should contact Jacqueline Atkinson at the Environmental Health and Safety Office (257-2120).

If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Don Braswell at 257-2120.
