ACADEMIC FACULTY POSITION: SPEECH COMMUNICATION

Positions. The Department of Speech at Louisiana Tech University seeks candidates to fill a nine-month, tenure-track faculty position in Speech Communication at the Assistant Professor level, ABD considered. The search begins immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Speech Communication/Communication Studies with prior full-time college/university teaching experience. The candidate should have a strong background in organizational communication and be able to teach a range of undergraduate and graduate speech communication courses, including such core courses as public speaking, business and professional communication, communication research methods, and interpersonal and organizational communication. Additionally, there are expectations that the individual filling this position will participate in departmental, college, and university committee structures; actively engage in scholarly research that extends the discipline’s knowledge base; and engage in academically related professional activities such as innovative program development, research collaboration with other faculty, and participation in professional activities representing the department at state, regional, and national levels. Candidates should demonstrate excellent teaching skills and will be expected to maintain a program of scholarly activity. A demonstration of teaching effectiveness may be required as part of the interview process.

Responsibilities. The major responsibilities will be to teach basic oral communication courses and undergraduate and graduate courses in organizational and interpersonal communication. Responsibilities also include student academic advising, research and scholarly activities, and service on departmental, college, and university committees.

The Department. The Department of Speech, administratively housed in the College of Liberal Arts, offers a Bachelor of Arts in Speech with a concentration in interpersonal and organizational communication and a Master of Arts in Speech with a concentration in speech communication or theatre. There are five full-time faculty lines for approximately 100 student speech majors. In addition, the department offers a Bachelor of Arts in Pre-Professional Speech-Language Pathology, a Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology, and the Doctorate of Audiology (Au.D.). The program holds CAA accreditation in speech-language pathology and audiology. There are 12 full-time and one-half time faculty lines for approximately 50 full-time graduate students in speech-language pathology and audiology and 85 undergraduates. The Department of Speech administers the University Debate Program and the Louisiana Tech Speech and Hearing Center.

The University. Louisiana Tech University is categorized as an SREB Four-Year 2 institution, as a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University-Intensive, and as a COC-SACS Level VI institution. As a selective admissions university, it offers a broad range of fully accredited undergraduate degrees, master’s degrees in a variety of areas, and doctoral programs in areas of specified expertise. Included among the university’s many special programs and facilities are the Center for Biomedical Engineering and Rehabilitation Science which has been identified as a Center of Excellence by the Louisiana State Legislature and the University of Louisiana System, the Institute for Micromanufacturing, and the Professional Development and Research Institute in Blindness. The university campus is located in Ruston in north central Louisiana, 70 miles east of Shreveport and 30 miles west of Monroe on I-20.
