POSITION: RHODES ENDOWED CHAIR

Herman A. “Dusty” Rhodes Eminent Scholar Chair in Biomedical Engineering

The Rhodes Chair is a tenured academic appointment with a competitive salary and support in the College of Engineering and Science at Louisiana Tech University provided in part by a $2 Million endowment.

The Chair holder will be an experienced researcher with a focus on biomedical applications of microsystems or nanosystems. The Chair holder is expected to increase significantly the level of research dollars from external sources such as federal agencies and private companies, and to contribute to the establishment of a research focus that complements the expertise and strengths of existing faculty members. The Chair holder will teach courses, supervise graduate students, conduct research, and participate in technology transfer and economic development activities. The Chair holder is expected to contribute to the overall quality of the Biomedical Engineering Program, and the College of Engineering and Science by increasing the capabilities of its graduates and by mentoring early career faculty members.

Beginning in the late 1960s, the Biomedical Engineering Program at Louisiana Tech University is one of the oldest and strongest programs in the U.S. The University established the Department of Biomedical Engineering in 1972 and received approval to offer B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees starting in 1973 – making it one of the first academic programs, if not the first, to offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees in biomedical engineering. The B.S. program was first accredited in 1978.

The Biomedical Engineering Program at Louisiana Tech University is housed in a new 50,000 square foot Biomedical Engineering Building that is physically connected to the 40,000 square foot Institute for Micromanufacturing building which provides highly specialized processing and characterization equipment for developing and analyzing micro and nano-scale devices and systems. Tech has a national reputation in bionanotechnology, rehabilitation engineering, neural engineering, and biomedical engineering education. The program has a well-established record of collaboration with the medical and research community including the LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport and the Biomedical Research Institute. The Chair holder will have an opportunity to utilize these resources and the clinical environment to develop microbiosensors or nanobiodevices that can contribute to better assessment of medical conditions and treatment modalities. Through the Office of Intellectual Property and Commercialization, the Center for Entrepreneurship and Information Technology, and the Technology Transfer Center in Shreveport, the Chair holder will have facilitated opportunities to develop new intellectual property, and assist the region and state through commercialization of new biomedical technology.

The Rhodes Eminent Scholar Chair in Biomedical Engineering will be filled by a person who has both research/scholarly and teaching/educational expertise; however, the research/scholarly quality and productivity will be pre-eminent. The standards which will be used to evaluate applicants include: i) a national/international reputation as an eminent scholar and teacher within biomedical engineering or a related discipline, ii) a record of prominent leadership roles on editorial boards, advisory boards and professional organizations, iii) an outstanding publication record, and iv) a record of external funded research, recognition for innovation in teaching, and development of grants and awards. Candidates must have an earned doctorate in an appropriate engineering or science field, and be a US citizen or permanent resident. Review of applications and nominations will continue until a suitable candidate is identified, with a projected start date of September 1, 2009. Louisiana Tech University is an EEO/AA employer. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. Send nominations and/or electronic applications including a CV, four references, and a statement of current/future research interests and goals to:
